As GDP Grows, PM Modi Urges Indians: Don’t Travel Abroad, Buy Gold or Host Weddings Overseas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India’s strong 7.8% GDP growth and congratulated citizens nationwide for their achievement.

He credited the country’s hard work, determination, and collective strength for delivering this impressive economic performance. Modi said India achieved this remarkable growth despite wars, crises, disrupted supply chains, and global uncertainty. He noted that instability has continued worldwide since the Covid pandemic began affecting economies during 2020. Despite these challenges, India continues progressing rapidly, demonstrating resilience and confidence through difficult global economic conditions. The Prime Minister urged citizens to strengthen their commitment toward building an Atmanirbhar, or self-reliant, India.

Modi Urges Swadeshi and Self-Reliance

He encouraged people to choose Swadeshi products and services because local consumption can strengthen India’s economy. Modi also asked citizens to avoid unnecessary foreign tourism and reduce spending on overseas destinations. He specifically urged Indians to avoid organising destination weddings abroad and embrace the concept of Wed in India. The Prime Minister also discouraged citizens from purchasing gold when they do not genuinely need it. He argued that unnecessary gold purchases can increase pressure on foreign exchange reserves during uncertain global conditions. Modi emphasized that choosing Indian products and services can create stronger domestic demand and support businesses.

He expressed confidence that sustained self-reliance could help India achieve developed-country status by its centenary. The Prime Minister asked citizens to celebrate economic growth while continuing their efforts toward building Viksit Bharat. He said India’s policies remain appropriate, its intentions remain clear, and citizens continue driving national progress. Modi also highlighted the collective power of 1.4 billion Indians working together toward shared national aspirations. Earlier in May, he had urged citizens to help India manage global supply disruptions and rising prices. He encouraged people to reduce fuel consumption, use public transport, and consider electric vehicles whenever possible. He also recommended working from home where possible to reduce fuel usage and support economic resilience. Modi again called for reduced foreign travel, fewer overseas weddings, limited gold purchases, and greater support for Indian products.
