PayPal Trims 10% of India Staff in Sudden Global Restructure

Digital payments platform PayPal has laid off roughly 600 employees across its major Indian offices in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. This sudden move eliminates nearly 10 percent of the company’s local workforce, hitting key software, operations, and finance teams hard. Company reports suggest that this initial wave might mark just the beginning of a larger reduction plan. Industry sources indicate that ongoing corporate shifts could eventually claim up to 25 percent of PayPal’s total Indian headcount, putting roughly 1,500 local positions on the line.

PayPal Cuts 600 Jobs Across India

Affected workers report that corporate managers delivered the shocking termination news during a brief, unannounced Monday morning conference call. Management immediately revoked the employees’ computer credentials and system access right after ending the call. Discharged staff members later received generic off-boarding emails containing basic details about career transition support and severance packages. Many former employees state that they are still waiting for clear updates regarding their promised full and final financial settlements. The hasty process and abrupt network lockouts have sparked widespread frustration among local workers.

These Indian job cuts stem directly from a broader corporate restructuring effort that top executives launched earlier this year. PayPal aims to generate at least $1.5 billion in operational savings by cutting up to 20 percent of its total global workforce. The multi-year plan will eliminate nearly 4,760 positions worldwide out of the company’s former 23,800-person global staff. Executives are rolling out these workforce reductions in distinct international phases, targeting the Asia-Pacific region first before hitting offices across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the United States.

Tech Giants Cut Costs Worldwide

PayPal’s widespread downsizing mirrors a growing trend across the global technology industry, where companies continue to slash operating budgets and trim headcounts. Ride-hailing giant Uber recently announced plans to cut 3,300 jobs to fund new research into autonomous vehicle technology. Meanwhile, enterprise software firm Oracle is preparing another major layoff round that could eliminate up to 10,000 additional roles worldwide. Industry tracking data shows that tech firms have already cut over 128,000 positions globally this year, quickly outpacing the severe layoff totals recorded last year.

This ongoing wave of corporate downsizing leaves thousands of skilled software engineers and digital finance specialists facing an overcrowded job market. Shifting business priorities and aggressive automation drives are forcing digital platforms to streamline daily operations and freeze non-essential hiring. Displaced tech professionals now compete against thousands of newly fired peers for a limited number of open roles. As companies like PayPal push forward with strict spending limits, IT workers across major markets must navigate a increasingly unpredictable employment landscape.
