OpenAI Expands to India, Office Coming to New Delhi

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is set to launch its first office in India later this year, choosing New Delhi as its base. The move marks a deeper push into the company’s second-largest market by user numbers.

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI confirmed that it has registered as a legal entity in India and started building a local team. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important step in our commitment to making advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

India plays a key role in OpenAI’s global strategy. Just this week, the company introduced its most affordable monthly subscription plan at \$4.60, aiming to tap into the nearly one billion internet users in the country. Data shared by the company shows that India now hosts the largest number of student users on ChatGPT, with weekly active usage quadrupling over the past year.

However, OpenAI also faces challenges in India. Several news publishers and book houses have accused the firm of using their content without authorization to train ChatGPT—allegations the company has denied.

The competitive landscape in India is intensifying, with rivals such as Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity offering advanced AI features, in many cases for free, to attract users.

Despite these hurdles, OpenAI’s new India office signals a long-term commitment to expanding AI adoption and building localized solutions for one of the world’s most important digital markets.
