Meta has started laying off nearly 8,000 employees as part of a major restructuring plan. Before sending layoff emails, the company instructed employees in several regions, including the US and the UK, to work from home. A few hours later, affected workers began receiving termination emails in different time zones. Reports said employees in Singapore received notices around 4 AM local time, making the move widely discussed across the tech industry.
Before the layoffs, Meta had around 78,000 employees globally. The company is cutting nearly 10 percent of its workforce while also reshuffling teams internally. Meta’s Chief People Officer Janelle Gale said the company will move around 7,000 employees into AI-focused teams and close nearly 6,000 open job positions. The company is also reducing management layers to create smaller and faster-moving teams.
Mark Zuckerberg has made artificial intelligence the company’s top priority. Meta plans to invest between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, mainly on AI infrastructure and development. The company wants to build leaner teams that can work more efficiently with AI-powered systems. Experts believe Meta is shifting toward a future where automation and AI handle a larger share of operations.

Meta Layoffs Trigger Employee Concerns
Inside the company, employee morale reportedly dropped after news of the layoffs spread. Some workers allegedly started collecting office snacks and spare laptop chargers before the official announcement. Reports also claimed Meta introduced a tool that tracks mouse movements and keystrokes to help train AI systems, leading to criticism from employees. More than 1,000 workers reportedly signed a petition against the tracking system.
The trend is not limited to Meta alone. Major tech companies including Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle have also announced layoffs or workforce reductions in recent months. Companies are increasingly focusing on AI investments while reducing dependence on large workforces.
RedoQ CEO Dipal Dutta said the current wave of layoffs reflects a long-term structural shift in the tech industry. According to him, companies now value professionals who can design and manage advanced AI systems rather than perform repetitive tasks. Experts believe AI-driven changes will continue to reshape the global technology workforce in the coming years.
