Google Offers Voluntary Exit Packages to Employees in Five Countries, Seeks Workforce Reduction

Google has expanded its voluntary employee exit programme to five countries, offering severance packages to workers seeking to leave the company. The initiative aims to control operational costs as Alphabet increases investments in artificial intelligence. The move follows Microsoft’s similar buyout announcement for thousands of employees. Both technology giants are reassessing workforce requirements while expanding their AI infrastructure. Google’s latest programme allows eligible employees to voluntarily leave their positions in exchange for financial compensation. However, the company has restricted the offer to selected business divisions and employees. The initiative reflects growing pressure on technology companies to balance workforce expenses with expensive AI development projects.

Restructures Workforce While Prioritising AI and Cloud Investments

Google has excluded certain strategic divisions from its voluntary separation programme. DeepMind and Google Cloud reportedly remain outside the initiative because both businesses require additional employees. The company continues strengthening its artificial intelligence research and cloud computing operations. Meanwhile, Alphabet has increased spending on AI infrastructure, computing resources and technology development. These investments require substantial financial commitments, encouraging management to review staffing requirements across other departments. Google therefore plans to reorganise selected teams while protecting business units essential to its long-term growth. The strategy highlights the company’s efforts to maintain operational efficiency without slowing technological progress.

Google’s voluntary exit programme has already affected employees in Switzerland. Reports indicate that the company introduced the offer there in June, while employees accepting the package began departing in August. Switzerland employs approximately 5,000 Google workers and hosts the company’s major engineering centre in Zurich. The severance package reportedly provided one month’s salary for every completed year of service, subject to a maximum payment equivalent to 12 months’ salary. At least four employees from one team of approximately 50 workers reportedly accepted the offer. The programme gives employees an opportunity to leave voluntarily while receiving financial support during their transition.

Microsoft and Google Introduce Voluntary Exit Programmes Amid Rising AI Costs

Microsoft has also introduced a voluntary buyout programme as technology companies adjust their workforce strategies. The company reportedly extended the offer to eligible employees across the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom. Approximately 60,000 employees could potentially fall within the programme’s scope. Microsoft employees at level 70 or below qualify for consideration, covering around 27 percent of its 223,000-person workforce. Eligible workers who accept the offer will reportedly leave the organisation by the end of December. The programme represents another significant workforce adjustment as Microsoft continues expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Microsoft’s latest employee buyout follows several workforce reduction measures introduced earlier this year. The company announced a voluntary retirement programme in April before cutting approximately 4,800 jobs in July. Microsoft continues investing billions of dollars in data centres, computing infrastructure and AI development. These investments support its expanding artificial intelligence services and technological ambitions. However, rising infrastructure expenses have encouraged management to reconsider staffing levels and operational priorities. Google’s latest voluntary exit initiative reflects similar pressures across the technology industry. Both companies are attempting to redirect resources towards AI growth while managing employment costs and organisational efficiency.
