Frederiksen Sounds Alarm Over NATO’s Future
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has issued a strong warning that an American takeover of Greenland would effectively spell the end of the NATO military alliance. Her comments came after renewed calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for control over the strategic Arctic island, which is a semiautonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark and a member of NATO.
Response to Trump’s Statements
Frederiksen responded directly to Trump’s suggestion that the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons and should discuss the issue within a set timeline. She said that if the U.S. were to attack another NATO country, including Greenland, the alliance’s structure and collective security guarantees would collapse.

Allies Express Support for Denmark
Many European leaders have backed Frederiksen’s stance, stressing the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty and NATO’s foundational principles. Greenland’s own Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, and Denmark’s ambassador to Washington have also rejected any talk of annexation, emphasizing that Greenland is not for sale and its future should be decided by its people.
Strategic Importance of Greenland
Greenland holds significant strategic value due to its geographic location between Europe and North America and its mineral resources. The U.S. already maintains a military presence at the Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland under longstanding defense agreements with Denmark. However, Frederiksen made clear that existing partnerships should not be used to justify a takeover.
Potential Diplomatic Fallout
Experts warn that if such takeover rhetoric escalates into action, it could damage long-standing cooperation between NATO members and prompt serious geopolitical tensions. Frederiksen stressed that Denmark seeks cooperation and mutual respect rather than unilateral moves that could destabilize the alliance.
Frederiksen Reaffirms Focus on Social Welfare
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reiterated her government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s welfare system. She said her administration will continue to prioritise public healthcare, education, and social security to ensure economic stability for citizens amid global uncertainty. Frederiksen stressed that a strong welfare model remains central to Denmark’s social cohesion and long-term growth.
Government Accelerates Climate Action Plans
Frederiksen has also stepped up Denmark’s climate ambitions. She announced that the government will accelerate investments in renewable energy, especially offshore wind and green hydrogen. Denmark aims to reduce carbon emissions significantly while creating new green jobs and maintaining industrial competitiveness. The prime minister said climate responsibility and economic development must move forward together.
Labour Market and Skills Remain a Priority
Addressing workforce challenges, Frederiksen highlighted the need for continuous skill development and labour participation. The government plans to expand vocational training programmes and reskilling initiatives to support workers as industries transition toward digital and green technologies. She said these measures will help Denmark maintain high employment levels and productivity.
Denmark Strengthens Role in European Cooperation
On the international front, Frederiksen emphasised Denmark’s active role within the European Union. She said Denmark will continue to support joint European efforts on energy security, migration management, and defence cooperation. According to her, stronger EU coordination will help member states respond effectively to economic and geopolitical challenges.
Leadership Focused on Stability and Inclusion
Frederiksen concluded that her leadership agenda centres on stability, inclusion, and long-term planning. She said Denmark will pursue balanced policies that protect vulnerable groups, support businesses, and prepare the country for future challenges.
