Ranveer Singh began 2025 on uncertain footing. Once considered one of Bollywood’s most dependable stars, he found himself out of favour and in need of a strong comeback. By the end of the year, however, the story had completely changed. He not only embraced fatherhood but also emerged as the biggest box office draw of 2025.
Few could have imagined that Ranveer would headline the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. In doing so, he surpassed box office benchmarks previously set by Shah Rukh Khan, SS Rajamouli, and Rajinikanth. What made the achievement more striking was the context. The win came after a prolonged phase when he was mocked, criticised, and frequently trolled. Ending the year as cinema’s top performer after starting it as Bollywood’s favourite target turned his journey into a redemption story many film lovers admire. With big projects like Dhurandhar 2 and Pralay lined up for 2026, it appears the prodigal star has firmly reclaimed his place.
Controversy fails to dent his comeback
Just days before Dhurandhar hit theatres, Ranveer landed in controversy. His mimicry of Rishab Shetty’s Kantara character upset sections of Karnataka, who felt it disrespected the daivas of coastal culture. Despite issuing a public apology, social media saw calls to boycott the film. The dominant narrative suggested that regardless of the film’s intent, Ranveer needed to be “put in his place.”
This image of being Bollywood’s enfant terrible had followed him for years. However, the controversy failed to affect the film’s run. Dhurandhar opened strongly and soon began shattering records. While audiences were captivated by Akshaye Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait, Ranveer also earned widespread praise. His dedication had never been doubted, but this film highlighted his willingness to push himself further and explore new limits.

A shift from star power to artistic maturity
In several scenes of Dhurandhar, Ranveer willingly stepped back, allowing Akshaye Khanna to dominate the frame despite being the film’s lead. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma applauded director Aditya Dhar for the choice and also praised Ranveer for embracing it without ego. Co-star Saumya Tandon echoed this sentiment, noting that Ranveer’s ability to give space to another actor reflected rare maturity.
This approach helped reset his public image. He was no longer seen as a problematic star seeking attention, but as a confident and secure artist focused on the craft. The transformation played a crucial role in reshaping the narrative around him.
Rewriting the superstar debate
In recent years, the success of Animal had positioned Ranbir Kapoor as the leading star of his generation, while Chhaava elevated Vicky Kaushal into the same conversation. During Ranveer’s lean phase, memes often suggested he had been left behind. Dhurandhar, however, changed that perception. The same online spaces now place Ranbir, Ranveer, and Vicky together as the new pillars of Hindi cinema.
Many now agree with director Rohit Shetty’s earlier assessment that Ranveer’s complete focus on his work sets him apart. As 2025 draws to a close, Ranveer Singh stands not just redeemed, but firmly established as a superstar in his own right.
