New Delhi: The Maharashtra government will conduct veteran actor Nana Patekar’s funeral with state honours, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar announced.
The decision recognises Patekar’s immense contribution to Marathi theatre and Marathi and Hindi cinema. Shelar said the government had consulted the Chief Minister’s office regarding the arrangements. Officials will announce the funeral details and other arrangements soon, he added. Nana Patekar died early today at the age of 75 after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest. According to reports, the actor had complained of a headache since the previous night. He was reportedly staying at home with his nephew, Prasad Patekar, when the incident occurred.

Nana Patekar’s Legacy in Cinema and Social Service
Family members found him unconscious and rushed him to the hospital for emergency medical assistance. Doctors at Manipal Hospital reportedly attempted resuscitation for approximately 45 minutes but could not revive him. Shelar expressed deep sorrow over Patekar’s death and remembered his influence on Maharashtra’s people. He said the actor’s absence would leave a void that nobody could ever fill. The minister recalled Patekar’s support for farmers and soldiers and his outspoken views on agricultural issues. He described the actor as an artist who overcame difficult circumstances and achieved remarkable success. Shelar also highlighted Patekar’s willingness to speak openly about issues affecting ordinary citizens. Born on January 1, 1951, in Maharashtra, Patekar built a distinguished career across Indian cinema.
Audiences admired his intense performances, distinctive dialogue delivery and portrayals of complex characters. His notable films include Natsamrat, Parinda, Ab Tak Chhappan, Welcome, Taxi No. 9211 and Yeshwant. He also appeared in Wajood and Housefull 5 during his extensive acting career. Patekar received three National Film Awards for his contributions to Indian cinema. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in the Marathi film Natsamrat in 2016. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contributions to cinema and the arts. Beyond acting, Patekar dedicated considerable effort to supporting farmers and communities affected by agricultural distress. He co-founded the NAAM Foundation with fellow Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure to assist drought-affected villages. The foundation supported water conservation, farmers’ families, suicide prevention initiatives and educational opportunities for farmers’ children. His charitable work strengthened his connection with rural Maharashtra and extended his influence beyond the entertainment industry.
