Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has strongly rejected allegations that the Central government influenced the removal of the film Satluj from the streaming platform. Responding to the controversy, Bittu said the government has no authority over OTT platforms and therefore could not have directed the film’s removal. The debate intensified after the movie disappeared from ZEE5 within 48 hours of its release. The sudden takedown triggered questions from members of the Punjabi film industry, social media users, and the Punjab government. Many demanded clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding the film’s removal. The issue has since developed into a political and public controversy.

Diljit Dosanjh Faces Fresh Row
During a public interaction in Ludhiana, Bittu criticised actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh and questioned his statements regarding the film’s limited availability. The minister claimed Dosanjh had already indicated that Satluj would remain on the platform for only a few days before being removed. Bittu argued that if the government had intended to block the film, authorities would not have allowed its release in the first place. He alleged that the filmmakers removed the movie after achieving their intended commercial objective. The minister also criticised some of Dosanjh’s professional choices and public remarks, while raising questions about the portrayal of Punjab’s militancy period in the film. He called for balanced storytelling on sensitive historical subjects.
Bittu further urged filmmakers to produce projects highlighting the sacrifices made by police personnel during Punjab’s insurgency years. He challenged Dosanjh and director Honey Trehan to create films depicting officers who lost their lives while combating militancy. According to the minister, films based on historical events should present multiple perspectives instead of focusing on only one narrative. He also questioned Dosanjh’s public positions during overseas events and criticised what he described as inconsistent messaging. His remarks have sparked fresh political debate and drawn mixed reactions from supporters and critics across social media platforms. The controversy continues to generate widespread discussion.
Minister Calls for Films Highlighting Security Forces’ Sacrifices
The controversy began after Satluj became unavailable on ZEE5 shortly after its release, prompting speculation about the reasons behind the decision. The Punjab government has questioned the circumstances surrounding the takedown, while Bittu has denied any involvement by the Centre. The film includes references to the militancy period in Punjab and portrays events linked to the tenure of former Chief Minister Beant Singh. The reasons behind the platform’s decision remain unclear, and no official explanation has resolved the ongoing debate. Meanwhile, public discussion surrounding the film, its removal, and the political reactions continues to attract significant attention.
