IC814 Kandahar Hijacking: Pilot Hijacked Plane Highlights Two Errors in Series

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijacked has attracted significant attention since its release. The series, which depicts the events of the December 1999 Kandahar hijacked, has faced criticism for allegedly altering the terrorists’ names to non-Muslim identities and ‘whitewashing’ the traumatic incident. In response to these concerns, Captain Devi Sharan, the pilot of the hijacked plane, has highlighted two inaccuracies depicted in the series that did not occur in reality.

Pilot Devi Sharan Hijacked Clarifies Inaccuracies in Series Depiction

The series depicted the pilot, portrayed by Vijay Varma, unclogging the plumbing lines and receiving a salute from the foreign minister after the siege concluded. However, in a recent interview, Devi Sharan clarified that these events actually occurred differently in real life.

“I did not repair the plumbing lines myself. The Taliban authorities sent a worker for that task. I only guided him into the aircraft hold because he was unfamiliar with the location of the lines,” Sharan told The Telegraph. Regarding the scene with the foreign minister, Sharan explained, “(Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh) made a gesture to show his appreciation for our efforts.”

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack – A Seven-Day Crisis and the Release of Militant Leaders

For those who might not know. IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack recounts the traumatic. Hijacking of an India-bound flight in December 1999. The aircraft, which departed from Kathmandu and was en route to New Delhi, was taken over by hijackers. The passengers and crew were held captive for seven days. The hijackers demanded the release of three high-profile militants: Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar. Ultimately, the negotiations led to the militants’ release in exchange for the hostages’ freedom. The hijacking resulted in one fatality.

The series has been met with calls for a ‘boycott’ due to allegations that the creators altered the hijackers’ names. A source informed ANI that a Netflix representative was called to New Delhi on September 2 in response to the series’ controversy.
