Hema Malini revealed that she went through a disturbing experience while living in a Mumbai bungalow before marrying Dharmendra. She said that during her early years in the city, she often felt suffocated while staying in apartments and strongly preferred bungalows surrounded by greenery.
In an interview mentioned in Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s book Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, the actress recalled that she grew up in cities like Chennai and Delhi, where open spaces and independent houses were common. When she shifted to Mumbai, apartment living made her uncomfortable for several months.

Hema shared that in 1972, while shooting for Seeta Aur Geeta, she bought her first bungalow in Mumbai. Before that, her father had purchased a sea-facing apartment for her in Walkeshwar. She remembered receiving a call from him on set, asking her to visit the property during her break.

She said her father asked whether she liked the flat, and she honestly told him that she did not enjoy living in South Bombay. Instead, she wanted a home surrounded by trees, similar to their house in Chennai. Following this, her father began searching for a bungalow in Juhu for her.
Hema Malini also spoke about staying in a small Bandra apartment while shooting her Hindi debut Sapno Ka Saudagar with Raj Kapoor. Costume designer Bhanu Athaiya mainly used the apartment for dress trials, making it a temporary arrangement.
Later, she moved into a bungalow, but her experience there turned unsettling. Hema recalled that she felt as if someone tried to choke her every night, making it difficult for her to breathe, leading her to believe that the bungalow was haunted.
