Yunus Flags ‘Seven Sisters’ Sea Access in Farewell Speech

Bangladesh’s interim government chief Muhammad Yunus said in his farewell speech on Monday that his 18-month tenure had helped restore the country’s sovereignty, national interest and dignity.He said Bangladesh no longer pursues a submissive foreign policy, remarks seen as indirectly targeting recent tensions with India.Yunus took charge after a student-led uprising in 2024 forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down.His speech preceded Tarique Rahman’s swearing-in after his party won general elections nearly two years after political unrest.

Yunus Says Bangladesh No Longer Submissive, Cites Strategic Sea Access

In his speech, Yunus described Bangladesh’s maritime territory as a “strategic asset” capable of driving major economic growth. He stressed stronger regional cooperation with Nepal, Bhutan and India’s northeastern states, known as the Seven Sisters, for growth.“

Yunus said Bangladesh’s seas are global gateways, enabling economic zones, trade deals and duty-free access to become manufacturing hub.

His repeated reference to the “Seven Sisters” without directly naming India drew attention, with observers interpreting it as an effort to highlight the region’s economic significance independently.
