Unbecoming of a government servant, embarrassment’: Senior Karnataka IPS officer Ramachandra Rao suspended over inappropriate video

The Karnataka government suspended senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao on Monday after an alleged video went viral.

The state said his conduct was obscene, unbecoming of a public servant, and embarrassing to the government.

The order said his actions violated Rule 3 of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968, leading to immediate suspension.

During the suspension, the government will pay Rao a subsistence allowance and bar him from leaving headquarters without permission.

The video allegedly shows inappropriate conduct during working hours and dates back to 2017, when Rao served as IGP of the Northern Range.

Rao denied the allegations, called the video fabricated, and said he would consult his lawyer before legal action.

In 2025, controversy arose after his stepdaughter Ranya Rao’s arrest in a gold smuggling case, leading to his compulsory leave and later reinstatement as DGP.
