Economist Nouriel Roubini has urged India to accelerate economic growth towards 9% to create enough quality jobs for its expanding workforce. He argued that annual growth of around 7% may not generate sufficient employment opportunities for young Indians. The warning comes as the country faces rising workforce expectations and rapid technological changes. Artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, including manufacturing, information technology and professional services. Roubini believes India must strengthen its economic momentum to convert its demographic advantage into meaningful employment. Millions of young people enter the workforce every year, increasing pressure on businesses and policymakers. Faster growth could help expand industrial production, attract investment and create better-paying positions. However, India must also ensure that economic expansion translates into sustainable employment rather than relying solely on headline growth figures.
Global Trade Shifts Could Create New Opportunities
Roubini believes changes in global supply chains could help India attract international investment. Many companies now seek to diversify manufacturing operations beyond China because of geopolitical tensions and business risks. This shift could create opportunities for India to expand its presence in global manufacturing networks. Industries such as electronics, automobiles and semiconductors could benefit from additional investment and production capacity. India’s large domestic consumer market also offers an advantage to manufacturers seeking new destinations. Roubini highlighted nearshoring and friendshoring as strategies that could encourage businesses to distribute production across different countries. Stronger infrastructure, competitive production costs and supportive policies could help India attract these companies. However, the country must compete with manufacturing destinations such as Vietnam, Bangladesh and Indonesia. Better trade access and consistent economic reforms could strengthen India’s position in international markets.
Artificial intelligence has made job creation an increasingly urgent economic challenge, according to Roubini’s assessment. AI tools can automate repetitive tasks and transform responsibilities across both manual and knowledge-based occupations. These changes could affect workers in administrative services, manufacturing, customer support and several professional sectors. India cannot depend on its large population alone to secure long-term economic success. The country must develop industries capable of absorbing workers with different educational backgrounds and skill levels. Manufacturing offers one potential solution because factories create employment beyond production lines. Logistics providers, component suppliers, maintenance teams and distribution networks also support industrial expansion. Electronics, textiles and automobiles could generate additional opportunities while improving productivity. Policymakers and businesses must also invest in training programmes that help workers adapt to changing workplace requirements.

India-US Trade Relations Could Support Economic Expansion
Roubini also sees stronger India-US trade relations as a potential driver of investment and manufacturing growth. He expects American tariff policies to become more constructive as inflation and affordability concerns influence US economic decisions. At the time of the reported interview, the first phase of an India-US trade agreement had reached the legal-drafting stage. The framework announced in February reduced US tariffs on most Indian goods from 50% to 18%, according to the report. India also sought improved market access to compete more effectively with regional exporters. Better trade arrangements could help Indian businesses reach overseas consumers and attract additional investment. However, companies will need competitive pricing, reliable infrastructure and efficient supply chains to benefit fully. Stronger commercial ties could support exports, industrial development and employment if both countries implement favourable trade arrangements.
Nouriel Roubini gained international recognition after warning in 2006 about serious weaknesses in the US financial system. He highlighted risks associated with risky mortgage lending, excessive household debt and vulnerabilities in financial markets. The US housing market collapsed in 2008, triggering widespread financial turmoil and a global recession. His earlier warnings earned him the nickname ‘Dr Doom’ because of his pessimistic economic forecasts. Roubini’s latest assessment, however, highlights India’s potential to benefit from changing global trade relationships. He believes continued economic reforms could raise India’s potential growth above 8%. Reaching growth closer to 9% would require sustained investment, stronger industrial capacity and effective employment policies. India must also prepare workers for technological disruption and changing business demands. Ultimately, creating enough quality jobs will determine how successfully the country converts economic growth into broader prosperity.
