The California Highway Patrol said both the driver and a passenger were ejected from the vehicle and later died from their injuries. Officials did not immediately identify the victims. Zampella gained wide recognition for co-creating Call of Duty and founding Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series.

He began his career in the 1990s as a game designer, co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002, and helped launch Call of Duty in 2003 before Activision acquired the studio.

An innovator in first-person military shooter games, Zampella led studios that produced some of the world’s best-selling video games. Earlier this year, his game Battlefield 6 set a new sales record for the franchise, earning praise from millions of players worldwide.
