At Least 5 Killed After Falling Off Moving Train Near Mumbra: Railways

At least five people lost their lives after falling from a moving local train near Mumbra in Thane district on Tuesday morning, according to officials from Indian Railways. The tragedy occurred as several passengers hung dangerously out of the overcrowded train compartments during peak rush hour.

Railway authorities confirmed that the victims fell between Mumbra and Kalwa stations. Local eyewitnesses said the train was packed beyond capacity, and many commuters clung to the edges of the coaches due to lack of space inside. When the train gained speed, a sudden jolt caused several passengers to lose their balance and fall off.

Railways Launches Probe, Blames Overcrowding

The Central Railway launched a high-level inquiry into the incident. Officials acknowledged the dangers of overcrowded compartments during peak travel hours and stated they would take immediate corrective steps. “The tragic incident reflects the pressure on Mumbai’s suburban rail network. We are working to identify the victims and assist their families,” a senior railway official said.

Emergency response teams rushed to the site and transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Local residents also helped authorities in the initial rescue efforts. Hospital sources confirmed that several others are being treated for critical injuries.

The accident has sparked debate on railway infrastructure and passenger safety. Commuters and activists are demanding long-term solutions, including additional trains and better crowd management. Railway officials have promised to enhance safety protocols and urged passengers to avoid risky travel practices, especially during peak congestion. In response to the incident, the Maharashtra government has also stepped in, requesting a detailed report from the Railways and urging swift implementation of safety upgrades.
