Seven elephants were killed early Saturday when a Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express collided with a herd in Assam’s Hojai district. The impact caused the locomotive and five coaches to derail, leading to major disruption of rail services. Railway officials confirmed that no passengers were injured despite the derailment. Several trains passing through the section were delayed or diverted as restoration work began promptly. The accident highlighted the risks wildlife face near busy railway tracks across the region.

Rajdhani Express Collides with Elephants in Assam
Hojai Superintendent of Police V V Rakesh Reddy confirmed the deaths of seven elephants and reported that rescue teams arrived immediately at the site. Authorities worked to secure the area while coordinating with railway and forest officials. The affected Rajdhani Express coaches were later attached to another engine. Passengers were guided safely, and the train resumed its journey toward Guwahati. Officials emphasized the swift response prevented injuries and minimized further disruption effectively.
Northeast Frontier Railway spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the accident occurred at 2:17 am in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under Lumding Division. The site is approximately 126 kilometers from Guwahati. Senior railway officers, including the General Manager and Divisional Railway Manager, rushed to the location to oversee rescue and restoration efforts. Passengers from affected coaches were temporarily accommodated in vacant berths of other coaches. The train departed the site at 6:11 am, with additional coaches planned at Guwahati to accommodate displaced travelers.

Railway Response and Wildlife Concerns
Railway officials stated the accident site is not a designated elephant corridor. The loco pilot applied emergency brakes after spotting the herd on the tracks, but the collision could not be avoided. Restoration work continues to repair damaged tracks and coaches. Trains scheduled to pass through the section are being diverted through alternate routes. Authorities assured the public that all safety protocols are being followed to prevent further incidents.
The accident has reignited concerns about wildlife protection along railway lines in Assam. Conservationists have urged improved monitoring and early warning systems near forested sections. Railway authorities emphasized balancing passenger safety with ecological conservation responsibly. Investigations are ongoing to determine further preventive measures for future accidents. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of managing human infrastructure alongside wildlife habitats.
