Drone Strike on Ukraine Train Kills Five

Drone Strike Sparks Panic on Passenger Train
A Russian drone struck a crowded passenger train in northeastern Ukraine, killing five people and triggering chaos among passengers, a Ukrainian soldier on board said. The train was travelling from Chop near the Slovak border to Barvinkove, close to the front line, when a drone exploded nearby and forced it to stop. Soon after, another drone hit a carriage directly, shattering it and setting it on fire. A military officer known by the call-sign Omar, who serves with Ukraine’s 93rd brigade, quickly ordered passengers to take cover and evacuate, a move that likely saved many lives among the 291 people on board.

Rescue Efforts and National Impact
As flames spread through the damaged carriage, Omar guided passengers away from the train, fearing further attacks on the stationary target. He then returned to the wreckage to search for survivors, where he found victims and rescued a terrified woman travelling with her baby. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as an act of terrorism, saying it targeted a key symbol of Ukraine’s resilience—the railway network that millions have relied on since the country closed its airspace in 2022. Despite the attack, railway authorities restored services within hours, while stations across Ukraine lowered flags to honour those killed.
