Roof collapse at Delhi Airport’s terminal after heavy rain, 1 dead

At least one person was killed and five others were injured when part of the roof at Terminal 1 of New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) collapsed onto cars, including taxis, during heavy rains on Friday. According to reports, Delhi Fire Services received a call about the roof collapse around 5:30 am. Both the roof sheet and support beams fell, damaging cars in the terminal’s pick-up and drop-off area. All the injured were rescued and transported to the hospital.

Naidu Monitors Delhi airport roof collapse, rescue operations ongoing

At around 5:30 am, Delhi Fire Services received a call about a roof collapse at Terminal 1 of Delhi airport. An official from Delhi Fire Services stated that three fire engines were dispatched to the scene. A rescue operation is ongoing to ensure no one else is trapped in the damaged vehicles.

Due to the incident, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has temporarily suspended all departures from Terminal 1 until 2 pm, and check-in counters are closed for safety. However, all flights departing from and arriving at Terminals 2 and 3 are fully operational, as well as arrivals at Terminal 1.

Delhi Airport Terminal 1 departures suspended until 2pm, terminals 2 and 3 operational

According to Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), heavy rainfall caused a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Terminal 1 to collapse around 5 am. Injuries have been reported, and emergency personnel are providing necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.

Naidu posted on X that he is personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport. First responders are on site, and airlines have been advised to assist all affected passengers. The injured have been evacuated to the hospital, and rescue operations are ongoing.
