Rajasthan: 5 Dead in Expressway Car Fire

Five people were charred to death while another was seriously injured after a moving car caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan Alwar district, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred near Maujpur on Wednesday night as the victims returned from a Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. Three women, a minor girl, and a man were among those killed. They were all residents of Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Jindal said a short circuit likely triggered the blaze. As the vehicle ran on CNG, the fire spread rapidly, giving the occupants no time to escape. A moving car caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Alwar district on Thursday, killing five people and seriously injuring another, police said. The incident occurred near Maujpur on Wednesday night as the victims were returning from a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi.

Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Raghuvanshi said fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes, but the car was already completely gutted. Three women, a minor girl, and a man were among those killed. All of them were residents of Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh. Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Jindal said a short circuit likely triggered the blaze. As it was a CNG vehicle, the fire spread fast, leaving the occupants with no time to escape.

Police recovered only skeletal remains from the vehicle and preserved them separately. They will conduct DNA tests to establish the victims’ identities, he said. The driver, identified as Vinod Kumar Mehar, jumped out of the vehicle but sustained around 80 per cent burn injuries. Officials first took him to a nearby health centre and later referred him to Jaipur for advanced treatment. Police are continuing the investigation.
