New Delhi: Five vehicles in Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s convoy collided with an ambulance on Uttar Pradesh’s Purvanchal Expressway. The accident injured several people, including Congress party workers and security personnel, according to police officials.
Gandhi remained safe during the incident, which occurred near Haliyapur, approximately 100 kilometres from Lucknow. Police officials said the five vehicles involved in the collision travelled at the rear of Gandhi’s convoy. The convoy was heading towards Sultanpur when the accident occurred on the busy expressway. Gandhi had arrived at Lucknow airport earlier that day before beginning his journey towards Sultanpur. His destination lay approximately 135 kilometres from the state capital, according to the report.

The collision occurred when the convoy had covered much of its journey towards Sultanpur. The vehicles were approximately 35 kilometres from their destination when the accident took place. CCTV footage from the accident site showed the ambulance travelling along the expressway’s rightmost fast lane. Several vehicles appeared bunched together across the other lanes, suggesting heavy traffic around the collision site. The footage also showed a Scorpio SUV with its bonnet badly damaged after the impact. The SUV appeared to have stopped directly in front of the ambulance following the collision. Authorities reported injuries among party workers and security personnel but provided no further details about their conditions.
Gandhi travelled to Sultanpur to appear before a special MP-MLA court in a defamation case. The court was scheduled to deliver its verdict that day, requiring Gandhi’s physical presence for the pronouncement. BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed the complaint against Gandhi on August 4, 2018, over alleged remarks concerning Amit Shah. Mishra, a former chairman of the Sultanpur District Cooperative Bank, accused Gandhi of making objectionable comments. The alleged remarks concerned Amit Shah, who headed the Bharatiya Janata Party during that period. Gandhi reportedly made the comments during a campaign rally in Bengaluru before the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.
