Pune bridge collapse: Congress demands accountability, calls for questions to be asked of those in power

Pune Bridge Collapse: 4 Dead, 18 Injured as Tourist Crowd Causes 32-Year-Old Structure to Fall

Four persons lost their lives and 18 others sustained serious injuries after a 32-year-old iron pedestrian bridge on the Indrayani River collapsed on Sunday afternoon in Pune’s Maval tehsil. Authorities had already declared the bridge unsafe, but tourists, ignoring a warning board at the site, crowded onto it. Over 100 people had gathered on the bridge—a popular spot for tourists and picnickers—when it collapsed at around 3:30 p.m. in Kundamala. Officials said recent heavy rains had increased the river’s flow, contributing to the incident.

Kharge Calls Pune Bridge Collapse an Avoidable Tragedy, Lauds Rescue Efforts

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called the bridge collapse a deeply distressing and avoidable tragedy. “I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the swift recovery and well-being of the tourists swept away by the river current,” he said. Commending the tireless efforts of the rescue teams working around the clock to locate and save those affected, he also wished a speedy and full recovery to the many people injured in this devastating incident,” Mr. Kharge wrote on X.

Congress Leaders Mourn Bridge Tragedy, Urge Strict Action Against Those Responsible

“As we mourn this profound loss, we must hold those responsible accountable,” he said. “Such preventable disasters demand that we ask meaningful questions of those in power.” Mr. Kharge emphasized that authorities must bring all individuals responsible for this tragedy to justice under the full force of the law. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the news of many people drowning due to the bridge collapse on the Indrayani River in Pune extremely saddening.
