14 Coaches Derail as Rescue Teams Rush to the Spot
Pakistan Railways spokesperson Babar Ali said around 500 passengers were travelling on the train. According to the driver, he felt a sudden push while passing through Sher Shah station and immediately applied the brakes. However, the train stopped only after 14 coaches had derailed. Rescue teams reached the accident site and began evacuating passengers from the damaged coaches. Authorities shifted the injured to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Officials dispatched a relief train and a medical van from Multan to support rescue operations. Railway authorities suspended train traffic on both tracks, disrupting services along the route. Multan Commissioner Amir Karim Khan visited the site and met affected passengers and their families. He directed officials to arrange temporary accommodation, transportation and breakfast for stranded passengers. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the deaths and urged authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured.

Passenger Raises Concerns About Repair Work
A passenger claimed that railway workers had repaired the nuts and bolts of coach number nine near Rohri before the accident. However, authorities have not independently verified this claim or established any connection between the reported repair work and the derailment. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials have not confirmed whether a mechanical fault or another factor caused the accident. Further details are expected as the investigation and rescue operations continue.
The latest derailment has renewed concerns about railway safety and maintenance in Pakistan. The country has witnessed several deadly train accidents over the years. In August 2023, the Hazara Express derailed near Nawabshah in Sindh, killing at least 30 people and injuring more than 100 others. That incident raised serious questions about railway infrastructure and maintenance standards. Authorities now face renewed pressure to determine the cause of the Rehman Baba Express derailment and strengthen passenger safety measures.
