Heavy Rains, Landslides Cut Off Mumbai–Pune Connectivity; Trains Halted, Expressway Closed

Heavy rain disrupted Mumbai-Pune connectivity on Monday, triggering landslides and widespread flooding. Authorities cancelled 16 trains and diverted nine others because of severe weather.

Officials closed the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old highway until further notice. Torrential rain halted rail and road traffic, leaving many commuters stranded. The IMD issued an orange alert for Mumbai and a red alert for Pune. A landslide struck near Thakurwadi around 3.05 am in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section. Another landslide hit the railway stretch between Khandala and Monkey Hill soon afterward. Central Railway said landslides affected all three railway tracks through the Bhor Ghat section.

Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila blamed continuous heavy rainfall for the disruption. Railway officials cancelled the Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express and Dhule Express. Authorities also cancelled the Pune-CSMT Sinhagad Express and several additional services. Railways diverted, rescheduled, short-originated or short-terminated several long-distance trains. Railway teams immediately began restoration work and urged passengers to check train schedules before travelling.

Landslides Shut Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Highway

Authorities suspended traffic on both carriageways of the expressway and the old highway. A landslide diverted Pune-bound traffic near Tunnel 2 early Monday. Floodwater submerged several stretches of the old Mumbai-Pune highway. Police urged commuters to avoid travelling between Pune and Mumbai until conditions improve. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation implemented traffic diversions from 4 am as a precaution.

Officials monitored the situation with the Highway Traffic Police and advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel. Flood-like conditions disrupted alternate routes through Maval and Tamhini Ghat. A collapsed concrete pillar forced authorities to close parts of the expressway. Waterlogging and landslides also disrupted traffic through the Khandala Ghat section. Authorities declared a holiday for schools and colleges across Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar because of heavy rainfall.
