Mumbai Landslide: 7 Dead, 7 Injured; Mayor Announces Compensation for Victims’ Families

A landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in the Ashok Nagar area of Chirag Nagar in Kurla West, Mumbai, at around 3:48 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials classified the incident as a Level II emergency. The landslide sent debris crashing onto nearby rooms of the chawl, trapping mumbai several residents underneath. Officials said the incident occurred near Rathod Medical in Kurla West. The disaster triggered an immediate rescue operation as authorities worked to locate people trapped beneath the rubble. BMC officials said witnesses reported that around six to eight people could remain trapped under the debris. The incident has caused concern among residents in the densely populated locality.

Rescue teams quickly reached the affected area and began removing the debris to search for survivors. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with around 50 BMC workers, are currently conducting the rescue operation. Emergency teams are using available equipment to clear the collapsed material and reach the people who may remain trapped. Authorities have cordoned off the affected area to prevent further risk to residents and rescuers. Officials are also monitoring the surrounding structures because loose debris and unstable sections could create additional danger. The rescue operation remains the main priority as teams continue their efforts to locate and evacuate those trapped under the rubble.

NDRF and BMC Teams Search Debris for Trapped Residents

The landslide has also resulted in deaths and injuries. Authorities identified two of the deceased as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari. Rescue teams took both victims to Rajawadi Hospital. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad brought dead at the hospital. Sohel suffered head injuries and received medical attention. Reports have also mentioned additional casualties and injuries as authorities continue to assess the situation. Officials are working to establish the exact number of people affected as the rescue operation progresses. Medical teams remain prepared to treat people rescued from the debris and shift seriously injured victims to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

BMC Mayor Ritu Tawade reached the accident site after learning about the landslide. She inspected the affected area and took stock of the rescue efforts. Senior civic officials are coordinating with the NDRF and other emergency personnel at the site. The civic administration is also assessing the condition of the nearby chawl structures to determine whether residents face any further danger. Officials have asked people to stay away from the affected zone while rescue teams continue their work. Authorities are expected to provide further details about the casualties, injuries and rescue operation as teams clear more debris from the site.

According to a BMC official, the landslide caused debris to fall onto rooms located within the chawl structure. Witnesses told officials that six to eight people could have been trapped beneath the rubble immediately after the incident. Rescue workers are therefore continuing their search carefully while removing the debris layer by layer. The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by residents living in vulnerable structures in Mumbai during adverse conditions.
