The tragic BEST bus accident in Mumbai’s Kurla West has claimed seven lives, with 42 others injured, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday. The accident occurred late Monday night when a bus lost control, crashing into pedestrians and vehicles along SG Barve Marg. Three individuals were declared dead on arrival at Bhabha Hospital, while the death toll rose further on Tuesday.

Bus Collides with Vehicles and Buildings
The bus, operating on route A322 from Kurla station to Sakinaka, was heading towards Andheri when it lost control, speeding over a 100-meter stretch. It collided with 30-40 vehicles before crashing into the RCC column of the Solomon Building, damaging its compound wall. After plowing through pedestrians and vehicles, the bus finally came to a halt inside a residential area, Buddha Colony.

Driver Detained, Investigation Underway
Authorities have confirmed the detention of the driver, identified as Sanjay More, following a recent accident involving an electric bus. Early reports indicate that the bus may have lost control due to a sudden surge in speed, leading to the incident. The bus, a 12-meter-long electric vehicle, was manufactured by Olectra Greentech and is currently leased by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking. Officials are actively investigating the exact cause of the accident, examining both mechanical factors and human error. The investigation will help determine whether the bus’s design, maintenance, or operational issues played a role in the event.

Traffic Disruptions and Rescue Efforts
The Mumbai Police have shut SG Barve Marg to manage the situation, rerouting traffic to other nearby locations. The BEST has deployed buses on 10 alternative routes to accommodate passengers affected by the closure. Rescue teams promptly transported the injured to nearby hospitals, and authorities continue their efforts to uncover the full details of the accident.
