Death toll rises to 36; NDRF teams & Army choppers rush to site in Kerala’s Wayanad

In the aftermath of massive landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that all government agencies & Army choppers are actively engaged in search and rescue operations. The landslides, triggered by heavy rain on the morning of July 30. Have devastated the high-range villages of Wayanad, leaving behind. A trail of destruction marked by destroyed houses, swollen water bodies, and broken branches of uprooted trees. Local authorities have confirmed that at least 36 people have lost their lives in these landslides.

Prime Minister’s Relief and the Devastation in Wayanad Hamlets

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of those who died in the Wayanad landslides. The once-picturesque hamlets of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha, known for their scenic beauty, now present a bleak picture of despair and isolation as landslides have cut them off from other regions. Floodwaters have washed away choppers, vehicles, leaving them stuck in tree trunks and partially submerged at various locations. Rescue operations are further complicated by huge boulders that have rolled down the hills, obstructing the paths of rescue workers.

Despite the heavy rains, dedicated rescue teams are seen braving the elements to shift the dead and injured into ambulances.
