An IAF Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a routine training mission, leading to the tragic death of two Indian Air Force pilots. Authorities confirmed that the aircraft went down after losing radar contact shortly after taking off from the Jorhat airbase. The crash caused fatal injuries to Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, both experienced officers serving in the Indian Air Force.
Soon after the incident, the IAF issued an official statement acknowledging the loss and expressing deep condolences to the families of the pilots. According to the Air Force, the officers were performing a standard training sortie when the accident occurred. Rescue teams and security personnel quickly rushed to the crash location in Karbi Anglong, which lies roughly 60 kilometers from Jorhat in Assam.

IAF Confirms Loss of Two Officers
Officials confirmed that the IAF Sukhoi Su-30MKI involved in the accident was a twin-seat, long-range multirole fighter aircraft used widely in India’s air defense operations. The jet, originally developed by Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi, is produced in India under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The aircraft remains one of the most advanced fighters in the Indian Air Force fleet and plays a crucial role in the country’s aerial combat capability.
Reports also indicated that the aircraft lost radar contact soon after departure, prompting immediate concern among ground control teams. Investigators are now examining technical data and operational records to determine the exact cause of the crash. Meanwhile, the Air Force has assured that a detailed inquiry will establish what led to the tragic incident.
Explosion Sound Heard Near Crash Site
Local residents living near the crash site reported hearing a loud explosion shortly before authorities began search operations in the area. Many villagers rushed toward the location with torches and mobile lights to assist emergency teams searching through the debris. Police officers from nearby stations and security personnel quickly secured the region to support rescue and investigation efforts.
According to eyewitness accounts shared with news agencies, the blast sound was powerful enough to draw attention from several nearby villages. Search teams also deployed helicopters and ground patrol units to locate the wreckage and confirm the fate of the crew members. However, officials soon verified that both pilots had suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
The IAF currently operates a fleet of more than 260 Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets, which form a major component of India’s aerial defense system. Following the accident, the Air Force reiterated its commitment to thoroughly investigating the incident while honoring the sacrifice and service of the two officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
