Delhi is prone to earthquakes as it is located in a high seismic zone (zone IV) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) seismic zonation map.
On January 23, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang at a depth of 80 kilometers, causing strong tremors across Delhi-NCR.
Two weeks earlier, on January 11, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan, triggering mild tremors in Delhi and nearby areas.
