High-Speed Rail Tragedy in Southern Spain
A high-speed train derailment and collision in southern Spain has killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more, making it the country’s deadliest rail disaster in over a decade. A Madrid-bound train derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba province, crossed onto the opposite track and crashed into an oncoming service. Nearly 400 passengers and staff were travelling on the two trains, and authorities confirmed that at least 24 people, including children, suffered serious injuries. Rescue teams continued overnight operations and warned that the death toll could still rise.

Authorities Probe Cause as Rescue Work Goes On
Spanish authorities have begun investigating the crash, which Transport Minister Óscar Puente called “extremely strange.” He said experts remain puzzled about how the derailment happened on a straight section of track shortly after the train left Málaga. The violent impact crushed several carriages and trapped passengers inside, forcing rescue teams to work through twisted wreckage. Officials suspended rail services between Madrid and Andalusia, while hospitals and emergency centres treated the injured and assisted anxious families. Leaders from Spain and across Europe offered condolences as the country mourned a tragedy that has shaken confidence in one of the world’s largest high-speed rail networks.
