Delhi Earthquake: 4.0 Magnitude Tremors Shake City and Noida

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi NCR early Monday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor hit New Delhi at a depth of five kilometers at 5:36 am.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded on X, urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety measures. He assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and staying alert for any aftershocks.

Many users on micro-blogging platform X shared their reactions, including political leaders from both BJP and Congress, who described the tremors as “strong.”

Delhi Police also posted on X, sharing an emergency contact for assistance. “We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help #Dial112. #Earthquake,” the post read.

The epicentre was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, an official told PTI.

The area, which has a nearby lake, has experienced smaller, low-magnitude quakes every two to three years. In 2015, it recorded a 3.3 magnitude earthquake, the official said.

A loud sound was also heard when the earthquake struck, he added.

The strong tremors prompted residents of several high-rise buildings in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad to rush outside.

Residents React to Strong Tremors

A woman in her 50s, who was on a morning walk in E Block of Noida Sector 20, said, “’Hum log bahar park me walk kar rahe the toh pata nahin chala. Lekin kafi tej tha. Log bahar aa gaye. (We were walking in the park, so we didn’t feel it strongly. But it was quite strong. People came rushing out).’”
