An under-construction three-storey building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazar area on Thursday morning, killing two people and injuring another. Local residents immediately rushed to the spot and began helping those trapped. Rescue teams soon reached the area to assist with the operation.

Witness Describes Sudden Collapse of Under-Construction Building

Delhi Fire Services (DFS) teams recovered two bodies from the debris. Local residents also rushed four people to a nearby hospital before the fire brigade arrived, according to Assistant Divisional Officer Rajesh Shukla. Officials deployed at least six fire units, including water tenders and rescue vehicles. Senior officers supervised the rescue operation. Authorities continued search and rescue efforts to check whether anyone else remained trapped.

Witness Mohd Nayeem said he woke up after hearing a loud crashing sound around 9:00 or 9:30 am. He and other residents rushed outside, initially fearing that their own house had collapsed. They soon discovered that the neighbouring under-construction building had fallen. Nayeem said workers had already constructed three or four concrete slabs, which collapsed together. He also recalled seeing rescuers bring a body out of the rubble.

Rescue Teams Recover Two Bodies as Search Operation Continues

According to the witness, workers had been constructing the building for the past three to four months. One injured labourer reportedly told residents that three or four people were present at the site when the structure collapsed. The incident occurred during the busy Diwali shopping season, when Old Delhi markets such as Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar attract large crowds. The accident has raised concerns about construction safety in the crowded market area.

The collapse comes a day after part of the historic Town Hall building in Chandni Chowk also fell. The over 160-year-old heritage structure suffered damage to its facade, first floor, roof and entrance porch. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi owns the building, which has remained largely unused since it shifted its headquarters in 2011–12. Last month, another five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Seemapuri area, killing four people, including two children, and injuring eight others.
