A small aircraft crashed in a rural area of Colombia’s Norte de Santander province on Wednesday, killing all 15 people onboard, authorities confirmed. The victims included a sitting member of Congress, making the incident one of the deadliest recent aviation accidents in the region. State-owned airline Satena, which operated the flight, said local officials from the community of Curasica first reported the crash location. Following the alert, rescue teams rushed to the site to assess the situation. However, authorities later confirmed that no one survived the accident.

President Petro expresses condolences as Colombia mourns aviation tragedy
Colombian congressman Diógenes Quintero was among those killed in the crash. His political party, the U Party, confirmed his death and described him as a dedicated public servant with strong ties to his region. The party said Quintero remained deeply committed to public responsibility and regional development. The Transport Ministry stated that officials confirmed the absence of survivors once they reached the crash site. The aircraft, registered as HK4709, took off from the city of Cúcuta at 11:42 am local time. It was headed to the mountainous municipality of Ocaña, a journey that usually takes about 40 minutes.

Satena said the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control minutes after departure. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash, although they have not yet disclosed any preliminary findings. The plane carried 13 passengers and two crew members. Among the deceased was Carlos Salcedo, a social leader who was preparing to run for Congress. Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered condolences to the families of the victims, calling the loss heartbreaking.
